From: Pieter Stouten DUPONTPHARMA COM> Date: 16 jul 1998 Subject: Pan-Atlantic Shogi Championship (PASC) ** UPDATE ** As announced before, from Monday 24 until Thursday 27 August 1998, the first ever Pan-Atlantic Shogi Championship (PASC) will take place in the Novotel London Hammersmith, London, England, as part of the second Mind Sports Olympiad (MSO). http://www.halcyon.com/stouten/mso-pasc.html http://www.mindsports.co.uk/ PARTICIPANTS ============ The most recent confirmation of participation comes from Manabu Terao (4-dan), travelling all the way from Japan, who said: "I will be participating in the coming First Pan-Atlantic Shogi Championship to see the historic moment in the Shogi world and get to know many shogi players outside Japan." Please don't disappoint Manabu, and come to the MSO-PASC for a chance to make new friends and meet old friends. Or to finally meet your e-mail shogi friends over the board. MSO-PASC caters to players of all nationalities and strengths. Nobody is too weak or too inexperienced. Everybody can have a good time. Just be there and you'll see! Other confirmed players are former European Champion Mike Sandeman (4-dan), and Larry Kaufman (5-dan), the strongest western shogi player, and his son Ray. Hey, European top players, are you really weaker than the Americans? Don't you want to prove otherwise? Well, this is the perfect opportunity to do so! REGISTRATION ============ Players who register with their national organizations (France, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Norway) or clubs (Washington DC, Hawaii, Mid-America, Los Angeles, Ohio, New York) before Friday 24 July 1998 do not need to pay any entry fee. This year the fee is GBP 25 (approximately US$ 40), up GBP 5 from last year because the tournament features more rounds. So, register now and play for free! We welcome Fassil Bekele, who has started accepting registrations on behalf of the New York shogi club. A complete list of contact persons is attached to this mail. GENERAL ======= It is still very likely that substantial amounts of sponsorship money will become available for the MSO-PASC (which will partially be used for prize money). Detailed information will be disclosed as soon as it becomes available. My MSO-PASC page will be updated as soon as relevant news breaks. Please refer to it regularly. Announcements will also be made on SHOGI-L. http://www.halcyon.com/stouten/mso-pasc.html Early reservation of overnight accommodation in London is highly recommended. http://www.mindsports.co.uk/accomm.html Let me finish by quoting Hans Secelle (president of the Federation of European Shogi Associations), about the MSO-PASC (August 24-27) and the European Championship (August 28-30): "Here's an excellent opportunity to make it .... 'A whole week in Shogi paradise'" I hope to see you all there and then. Any questions? Just send me e-mail.
