From: Kazuhiro Yoshimoto LOGAN NET> Date: 15 jul 1998 Subject: Re: Help! Furibisha vs. edge attack? Hi, Tony. Here is my opinion about the question you posed. The edge attack against Mino castle doesn't seem to be a popular way of attack. I think the reason is because it takes a lot of moves to make an ideal form of attack. But it is very effective against the Anaguma castle. Castling Furibisha Anaguma takes a lot of moves. This allows static-rook side to form an ideal edge attack formation. If the static rook side can afford these moves, it seems to be effective against the Mino castle, too. George may have applied it to break your Mino castle assuming (?) that there will be no quick attack from the Furibisha side. The following is a line of attack developed by Tanaka Torahiko Pro 9 dan. (Taken from Kindai Shogi Magazine, December 1997) It is titled as "Subway Rook Attack". It uses the rook for the edge attack in addition to the bishop, silver, and lance. But to break the Mino castle, maybe fewer pieces would be enough. This is written for the static-rook side to break the Anaguma castle. Still I believe Furibisha players can learn a lesson from it. How to punish it? Maybe you can learn something from the following advice given by Tanaka 9-dan for the static-rook player. 1. Try not to cause a fight in the right side area. 2. Focus on the completion of the attack formation in the left-side area. 3. When the attack formation is complete, attack quickly. (Ignore the white's attack on the second file, and focus on your attack) Black: Static Rook (Subway Rook) White: Ranging Rook with Anaguma castle 1.P-7f P-3d 2.P-2f P-4d 3.S-4h S-3b 4.P-5f R-4b 5.K-6h K-6b 6.K-7h K-7b 7.P-9f K-8b 8.P-9e L-9b 9.G4i-5h K-9a 10.B-6f S-4c 11.S-8h S-8b 12.G6i-6h G4a-5b 13.N-7g G-7a 14.S-9g G5b-6b 15.S-8f G6b-7b 16.S-8e P-3e 17.P-2e B-3c 18.L-9h R-3b 19.R-3h B-4b 20.R-3i R-3d 21.R-9i P-2d 22.P-9d Px9d 23.Sx9d Lx9d 24.Lx9d P*9c 25.P*9b Kx9b 26.Lx9c+ Nx9c 27.P*9d S*8d 28.L*9h P*9e 29.Lx9e Sx9e 30.Rx9e P-8d 31.Bx8d G-8c 32.Px9c+ Sx9c 33.Bx9c+ Gx9c 34.P*9d G-8c 35.N*8d Gx8d 36.P-9c+ K-8a 37.S*8c resigns BTW, Did Doug tell you about the "Show Me the Shogi" T-shirts of the OHIO Shogi Club?
