From: Eric and Jackie GTE NET> Date: 6 jan 1998 Subject: Re: Maka-Dai-Dai Shogi rules (was: Shogi variants joke) This brings up a very critical question-which rules are correct? Is the G.F. Hodges phamphlet correct, or is there a newer site that has [updated] rules? The question which rules are correct can never be answered. Hodges's source was a history professor and as long as he does not come up with new evidence the present rules will be valid. This would be quite disappointing to me if those particular rules were no longer valid, since I've actually played thru a couple of games, and I'd hate to have to re-learn it! They may have been valid at some time in the past and then found not to work so well. My predicament is quite serious as well: I am Dutch maka-dai-dai (I think it was that) champion old-style (before Hodges updated the rules) and now find myself a champion of a game that no longer exists! The older game may be superceded by the new rules, but it DOES still exist-as a variant of the variant! Having never seen the older piece moves, I would be interested in seeing them-would anyone having access to those be willing to publish them, or direct me to a site that might have them still up?
