They also must be shodan or stronger. The second group is open to everybody of all strengths and all nationalities, but the participants of this group are mostly kyu players. Within the FESA (Federation of European Shogi Associations) there are ongoing discussions about the format of the European Championship, so the rules and regulations may change in the future. The 1998 European Championship promises to be very attractive with many players of various strengths and lots of interesting side events. I would recommend the EC to anybody who wants to have lots of shogi and other fun, wants to make new friends, meet old friends and finally meet those people that they only know from e-mails.
