Dear shogi friends,

This weekend the shogi tournament Goteborg Open 1998 was played in
Goteborg, Sweden. We had four visitors from Norway, and the other twelve
players were Swedes.

The tournament was played in a nice atmosphere and despite the high number
of players with beginner ratings, the shogi level was impressive in some
games. This was the first open international shogi tournament in the Nordic
countries, and I predict that from this cradle of Nordic shogi several dan
players will emerge in the near future.
