From: Phil Holland HOLLANDNUMERICS DEMON CO UK> Date: 13 sep 1997 Subject: Results from the 1997 Royston Shogi Congress The 1997 Royston Shogi Congress - Results The Royston Shogi Congress was held on Saturday 13th September at the Coombes Community Centre in Royston, Herts, UK. The Congress was, to my great disappointment, very poorly attended, with only 7(!) players altogether competing in the 3 tournaments: Shogi, Tori-Shogi and Mini- Shogi. Unless the entry is much improved in 1998 (probably on September 12th), then the 1998 event will, regrettably, be the last to be held in Royston! The results of the Shogi and Tori-Shogi events are attached. The tournament was noted for a number of firsts: 1. 1st under-18 to enter the British Open Tori-Shogi Championship. 2. 1st player to win both Shogi and Tori-Shogi events on the same day. 3. 1st junior to defeat 3 Dan-players in the Mini-Shogi event. The prizes awarded were as follows: Doug McGown Memorial Shogi Tournament 1st - Stephen Lamb - 3 wins 2nd - Steven Cain - 2 wins Junior - Sarah Holland - 1 win It is recommended that Simon Wilcock be promoted from 10-kyu to 9-kyu. British Open Tori-Shogi Championship Champion - Stephen Lamb Runner-up - Simon Wilcock Junior - Rachel Holland It is recommended that Stephen Lamb be promoted from 15-kyu to 14-kyu. Mini-Shogi Competition (2pts for a win, 1pt for a defeat) 1. Rachel Holland - 16pts (5 wins) 2. Simon Wilcock - 12pts (4 wins) 3. Stephen Lamb - 11pts (5 wins) 4. Hideki Tanaka - 10pts (3 wins) I hope I will see you all in Royston in 1998............Phil ---------------------------------------------------------------- Doug McGown Memorial Shogi Tournament ===================================== Round 1: ======== Steven Cain vs Stephen Lamb 0-1 Phil Holland vs Hideki Tanaka 0-1 Sarah Holland vs Simon Wilcock (Bishop) 0-1 Round 2: ======== Hideki Tanaka vs Stephen Lamb 0-1 Simon Wilcock vs Steven Cain (4 pieces) 0-1 Sarah Holland vs Phil Holland (4 pieces) 1-0 Round 3: ======== Phil Holland vs Stephen Lamb 0-1 Hideki Tanaka vs Steven Cain 0-1 Rachel Holland vs Simon Wilcock (2 pieces) 0-1 Final Table =========== Pos.
