Sam, as is common with computer chess tournaments, it is not allowed to change any of the program parameters during the game. Grandmaster Benjamin was not allowed to touch Deep Blue's settings in any way during the game. (Who is the other grandmaster you are talking about?). Read the "Rules of the Match" on http:/www.chess.ibm.com and you will see that all conditions were set in favor of Kasparov, so to me this was a test as true as it can be. Anyway, now that a computer program has finally won a multi-game match against the world champion in chess, I hope this will be motivation for chess programmers to take up the real challenge and look into serious stuff like Shogi. One thing is sure however, the current brute force approach of Deep Blue does not apply very well to Shogi. With 200 million positions per second DB would be able to search 5, maybe 6 ply in a complex shogi position with many pieces in hand. It will take more to challenge Habu! With a branching factor of 150, you get up to 75 billion terminal positions after a 5 ply search. Computer shogi probably can only be approached with selective search or pattern-based algorithms.
