I have never seen any of Tony's portable sets, but he has briefly
described them to me over the phone.  Apparently, the board and pieces
are made out of stiff card.  Each square of the board is in fact a small
pocket, and each piece has a "tab" at the bottom which slots into these
pockets to hold the pieces in place.  So yes, it can be played in a car.
I have no idea how sturdy the set is or of it's general quality, though
Tony assures me it is very good.
