Promotion of Pawn, Rook and Bishop is practically a given whenever the opportunity arises. But even in a relatively short competetive career, I've had positions come up with possible pawn-drop mates a couple of times. In a mating attack, especially in a semeai, it's worth a look to see if non-promotion can make the difference. I'd be really angry (and surprised) if promotion is what causes the loss of a game. Silvers and knights, of course, are a different matter... Tony
