From: Adam Atkinson MISTRAL CO UK> Date: 17 mar 1997 Subject: Apology In case this is not obvious, I did _not_ intend to come across as being "against" _The Art of Shogi_. I apologise to the author (and everyone else) if that's the impression people got. I don't think my comment about non-promotion should be taken as "daming criticism" at all. Since the book is clearly NOT aimed at beginners, I think Mr Sloan's objection to my comment is unreasonable. I have a "not for total beginners" book on chess which has an aside about underpromotion in it which I found very interesting: perhaps I have a morbid fascination with pathological examples. I am far from being an expert player of Shogi. Indeed, I'm hardly a player at all as all I really do is relatively easy Tsume-shogi. I really don't know how common draws or non-promotion are in real play. (Has anyone here _ever_ not promoted a rook/bishop/pawn?) Adam Atkinson (ghira mistral co uk) "That's the biggest shark I've ever seen" he said, superficially.
