From: Martin Danerud PARTILLE MAIL TELIA COM> Date: 11 mar 1997 Subject: Shogi in Sweden Dear shogi friends, About six months ago I started some shogi activities in Goteborg, Sweden. During the autumn I gave three lectures about shogi and we started monthly meetings at the City library. The number of participants in these activities is still growing, and several players have bought games and books. Last meeting we were thirteen people coming together around one tsume problem and friendly games. At our next meeting, on March 20, we will found the Swedish Shogi Association. On April 12, we will arrange a shogi day at a big mall in central Goteborg. The shogi day will include the first ever shogi tournament in Sweden. It will be a tournament for beginners with three rounds and 45 minutes per player and game and no byo-yomi. These players still do not have any grades but after this first tournament I will encourage them to continue to play and go to tournaments in continental Europe. In the future we may also be capable of arranging a regular shogi tournament, where we can welcome any visiting players from the rest of Europe. This tournament on April 12, however, will only be suitable for beginners from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. So, if there are any of you out there, you are welcome to the following tournament: Date: Saturday, April 12 Place: Nordstadstorget (close to the Railway Station), Goteborg, Sweden Latest time to be there for players: 09.45 Round 1: 10.00 Round 2: 12.00 Round 3: 14.00 Contact: Martin Danerud Oxledsvagen 61 433 67 Savedalen Telephone: +46 31 267505 e-mail: martin.danerud partille mail telia com The shogi day is also a way of showing shogi to the public, since there will be thousands of shopping people passing this place during this Saturday. We hope that at least some of them will find their way to the wonderful shogi game. Best regards, Martin Danerud
