There is not so many active japanese players in Europe. I give below the list. For each grade, I give the last elo (whenever the last game was played) and the number of official games played in Europe. This list differs from the list in my page (in the official list appear only the players who have played at least 12 games, and who have played a game in the last 2 years). The more games played, the more accurate the elo. The 2 Dan list contains only one player ! (A strong 2 Dan was promoted to 3 Dan with the european system last year). For 1 Dan --------- 1776 (16) 1742 (33) 1854 (16) 1705 (16) Average : 1769 (1 kyu level) For 2 Dan --------- 1975 (7) For 3 Dan --------- 2005 (14) 2026 (20) 2032 (26) 2059 (43) (promotion in Europe last year) 2071 (20) 2105 (40) 1950 (164) (promotion in Europe, many years ago) Average : 2035 (3 Dan level) For 4 Dan --------- 2068 (12) 2261 (41) 2153 (28) 2140 (16) Average : 2155 (35 above the 4 Dan level) These calculations must be taken in account very carefully : for each grade, there is only a little number of players ! But I can say that the 3-4 Dan have about the same level than the 3-4 Dan in Europe. There is a big gap between the japanese shodans and the japanese sandans (much more than 2 grades). One last important precision : in the elo list, only official games are counted (games played in at least 45 minutes and a 30 seconds byoyomi). 2. For comparison with the european system : Promotions by the elo : a player must be above the elo limit of the higher rank for at least 5 consecutive games (see the precision several lines earlier). (Active players play about 10 games in 6 months ie 2 tournaments). A promotion can be obtained with the points system. (For 4 Dan, both system are required). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Get the last european Shogi news at ----------------------------------------------------------------------
