From: Matt Casters NETPOINT BE> Date: 11 jul 1997 Subject: European Championships 1997 (correction) Dear Shogi-friends, Some people and the organisation of the EC have asked me to clarify my statement about who's allowed to play in the European Championships. In this mail I will try to be as clear as possible about this issue. The rules are as follows : (for the dan-section) A person who wants to participate in the European Championships : 1) Has to be at least 1-dan in strength (or invited by FESA on the basis of other, well-defined, criteria) 2) Has to have one of the following : a) his residence in any FESA member country. b) citizenship of any FESA member country. As far as the side-section of the Championships is concerned (the kyu-group) there are no such restrictions. (well, you can't be a dan-player of-course) The first 3 European participants (residency in or citizenship of FESA member country) in the side-section are invited in the dan-group the next year. In the past the chance to play in the dan-group has been a motivation for a lot of kyu-players to be the best in the kyu-group, because it offers them a chance of promoting and gaining experience. If you have more questions concerning these issues, you can always ask your FESA-representative or me. I'll gladly forward any questions you might have. I appologise for the errors I made in my previous posting, Kind regards, Matt Casters
