Both . Actually, deciphering the code is much much harder than solving the problem (which is easy, but, I hope, entertaining). Each slash marks a row of the board, starting at the top. Each number represents that number of consecutive spaces. Letters represent the pieces, using the standard abbreviations. Upper case indicates a White piece, lower case a Black piece.
