From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 21 feb 1997 Subject: Report on the 7th CSA Computer Shogi Championships (LONG) I wrote an internal report about my experience and impressions in the Computer Shogi Tournament earlier this month. Because I think more people might be interested in both the set-up of the tournament, the cleaned up tournament results and the games from the finals on Sunday, I am sending this to Shogi-L. For those who are not interested in Computer Shogi, I apologize for this post being so long. Reijer ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 7th Computer Shogi Championships ==================================== The Sheraton Grand Hotel, Tokyo February 8th & 9th 1997 Introduction ============ The Computer Shogi Championships are an annual tournament in which Shogi programs can compete against each other. There are basically three types of participants: the commercial developers, the researchers and the hobbyists. The first category usually has the best and fastest machines to run their programs on (and usually some people from the company to take their machines to the tournament venue). The second group usually has good hardware as well, but their programs might have some unusual features. The third group consists of people who use their spare time to try and make a program to compete with the big money of the commercial programmers. Usually these programs participate every year, without a dramatic improvement of results or hardware. An example is Super Hashimoto Shogi, which still runs on a 68000 and is written in assembler language. The tournament had two stages. From last year's tournament the top three programs did not have to qualify for the finals. For the remaining five spots in the finals on Sunday, a preliminary tournament was played on Saturday. This preliminary tournament was a seven round tournament according to the Swiss tournament system. Thinking time for each game is at most 30 minutes per side. There is no byoyomi, which meant that the strength of some programs dropped dramatically as soon as the time pressure built up. My interest in this tournament this year was my own program called Heishinku (a pun on the famous Dutchman Geesink, who shocked Japan in the Tokyo Olympics by winning the gold medal in Judo). Of course I was aiming for the big money. After all, the first prize in this tournament was 100,000 Yen, second prize 50,000 Yen and third prize 30,000 Yen. I also had a chance to win the amateur prize, which was a Fujitsu personal computer. Indeed, enough to play for, and the chief judge would certainly be on my side in case I needed him, because that was no-one else but Matsubara-san, my research supervisor. Before the tournament ===================== More or less especially for this tournament I was allowed to buy an Akia 200MHz desktop computer, so I could never blame my bad results on the hardware. That a desktop computer is still considerably different in weight from a laptop became clear when I had to change trains in Tokyo. It turned out that it was almost a 15 minute walk to get from the Yamanote-sen to the Keiyo-sen, turning my small and handy Akia into a backbreaking piece of junk. This was all soon forgotten when I arrived at the hotel: the enormous and enormously luxurious Sheraton Grand Tokyo Bay Hotel & Resort. After checking in I had a look at the playing venue, which turned out to be a big tent in what can only be described as the hotel's backyard. The tent was next to a building which looked very much like a church and which turned out to be exactly that, as I was to find out on Saturday. In the tent was a very uncomfortable looking Kakinoki-san, one of the organisers and the author of one of the strongest programs. He was obviously cold and I could only hope that this was because the heaters were not turned on and this would be different on Saturday. After less than five minutes in this freezer I left, with the complete evening ahead of me. That was when I made the big mistake of trying to make some last minute improvements of my program. I should have been content with reading a book while staring out of the window at the Disney castle (yes, the Sheraton was within walking distance of Tokyo Disney World). Or I should have sharpened my Japanese language skills by talking to my roommates Mori and Ozaki, when they entered the room at around 10. But instead I worked until a little past midnight, convinced that I had still a chance to take on the really good programs. The Qualifying Rounds ===================== Fortunately, the tent was much warmer on Saturday than it had been on Friday. Since the Shogi programming community is rather small, the event had more the feeling of a reunion than of a hard fought battle for points. Still, this time around a record 33 programs competed (last year there were only 25). Among the entrants were also three foreign programs. Apart from Heishinku, there was also Shogi Gold, made by Andrew Pearce but operated by Yamada Teiichi of the ISPS (International Shogi Popularization Society), and the star of the qualifying rounds, Shotest by Jeff Rollason. Jeff is a very experienced game programmer and that was clear from his program. Even though Jeff has almost no knowledge about Shogi and he had only worked on his program for about four months, his program (based on speed and a chess-like evaluation of positions) won one game after game and had a chance to qualify for the finals until the last game. However, it was convincingly beaten by Yano Shogi, which meant that Shotest finished in 10th place in the qualifying tournament. This was much better than Heishinku, which crashed twice and played one illegal move in the first four games. One of the crashes occured when the opponent hardly had any material left. After that, I cut out all changes made on Friday and the program won its three remaining games. This meant a result of 3 wins and 4 losses and 20th place in the qualification tournament. Even though three straight wins sound like the program might have been very strong without the changes made on Friday, the level of Shogi play still leaves much to be desired. Definitely some room for improvement there. The programs who qualified for the final were YSS by Yamashita-san (7-0), S1 by Professor Noshita's Dentsudai University, Yano Shogi 3 by Yano-san, Sekita Shogi 3 by Sekita-san and J III by Joko-san. This meant that of the final eight programs five were made by commercial programmers (Kanazawa Shogi, Morita Shogi, Kakinoki Shogi, YSS and Sekita Shogi), two were made by amateurs (Yano Shogi and J III) and only one was a research effort (S1). Furthermore, all programs also played in last year's tournament and except for Sekita Shogi also all programs had qualified for the finals last year. It looked like nothing much had changed in a year and I expected that Kanazawa Shogi would easily win the tournament again. Kanazawa has won this tournament with differently named programs every year. For a while it seemed that Morita Shogi could challenge him, but last year Morita Shogi even had to give way to Kakinoki Shogi, so there was no reason to expect that this year would be different. The Finals ========== Being out of the tournament, I had a lot of time for other things on Sunday. Especially in the first three rounds, when all games went according to the seeding of the programs, there was time for other things. In a side-game Shotest convincingly beat Heishinku and I assisted Iida-san (a former professional Shogi player who now works at Shizuoka University) with the commentary on the big Shogi board. I could also take a look at the beautiful young women dressed up in kimono for the wedding ceremonies that were continuing without much of a break on both Saturday and Sunday in the next door church. Slowly quite a number of interested people were gathering in the tent and there were also a number of cameras from different television stations. It might be hard to get sponsors for this tournament, but there is certainly a reasonable level of attention from the public and the media. The first upset occured in the fourth round of the tournament: YSS beat Kakinoki Shogi. This should not really be a surprise, since hardware can be a decisive factor among the strongest programs and only Kanazawa, Morita and YSS were running on 500 MHz Alpha's. Kakinoki Shogi was running ``only'' on a 200 MHz PowerMac. But still this victory was an indication that Yamashita had been able to make the biggest improvements to his program. After beating Sekita Shogi convincingly YSS's next opponent was then Kanazawa Shogi. YSS against Kanazawa Shogi proved to be the vital game of this tournament. Kanazawa Shogi had pretty much crushed the opposition until now and YSS had now won 12 games in a row in the tournament. It was a very exciting game where Kanazawa Shogi played a weird move in the middle game, but then attacked strongly. YSS defended very well and threatened to make an entering king that could only be held back at the expense of a lot of material. When Kanazawa Shogi did not have any more material, YSS mated quickly. Then I saw something I will not easily forget. Yamashita burst into tears and wept uncontrollably for minutes. It is rare to see a Japanese cry, but it is even rarer to see a professional programmer cry because his program does what it is supposed to do. Later I was told that Yamashita had been working on his program for thirteen years (this surprised me, because I wouldn't have given him a year over 25) and had taken great personal and financial risks to make his program as strong as it is today. After beating Kanazawa Shogi, YSS also beat Morita Shogi in the final round to make the victory complete. And so the reign of Kanazawa Shogi came to an end; the new king in Shogi programming land is called Yamashita. Observations ============ The victory of YSS was deserved and very welcome. Kanazawa Shogi, Morita Shogi and Kakinoki Shogi have been dominating computer Shogi for a long time. Actually, without YSS's win, this would have been a rather predictable tournament. There was only one new finalist this year (Sekita Shogi) and almost all results, both on Saturday and on Sunday went according to plan. However, we should not be too delirious about the YSS win. This program has been part of the ``establishment'' for a couple of years and it was just that Yamashita was able to improve his program a little more than the other three that made it win the tournament. As far as the level of Shogi is concerned, I have not been able to spot dramatic changes when comparing the level of play with last year's tournament. Mr. Iida also commented that the level of Shogi was not significantly better than last year. The top programs can play a decent game of Shogi, but I do not think there will be a breakthrough to professional level of play in the near future. There is definite room for improvement in hardware and software, but it remains a question whether the stadard algorithmic techniques used in chess programs (and in most, if not all, strong Shogi programs) will be enough to play Shogi at the same high level as chess computers. Finally, from a research point of view the tournament was disappointing. It was good to see at least one research program in the final, but in general there is no research atmosphere at the tournament. People are very secretive about their programs and it is definitely not the place to pick up new ideas, unless you need to get them from your own program's mistakes like me. But let there be no misunderstanding that this is a great tournament for participants and public. The Sheraton is of course a great place to stay and play, expert commentary by professional Shogi players is being given, and it is the place where you can put all your work to the test. I certainly hope to be able to participate next year and use the experience I have had in this tournament for important improvements in the Shogi play of my program.
