From: Benjamin Good ANDREW CMU EDU> Date: 17 feb 1997 Subject: bonus questions thanks very much to the people who put up the info for the pieces missing from the tai shogi instructions on the chess variants page. so i've been looking at the page and i have more questions; since there a lot of definite errors on the page (moves for kylin and phoenix are backwards, lion is incomplete, pieces are missing, etc), i have doubts about other things on the page. question 1: in the opening setup, the center of the backrow is shown as: FK | G | DV | E | DSp | FK | G which breaks the symmetry typical of all the shogi setups i have seen. i would have automatically considered it a typo, but it's listed this way on both sides of the board (actually, from black's view, it's listed as FK | G | DSp | E | DV | FK | G. should it really be FK | G | DV | E | DSp | G | FK ? question 2: in the opening setup, each player gets one OK and one RB, which start in the 4th row, 9 columns from each side of the board. so which piece goes on which side? on the cvp, the OK is on black's left, but on white's right, i doubt that this is correct. question 3: the moves and the starting positions of the left and right chariot suggest that the diagrams for their moves are switched. currently they are listed as: o =single step move * =range move |---|---|---| |---|---|---| | | * | * | | * | * | | |---|---|---| |---|---|---| | |RCh| | | |LCh| | |---|---|---| |---|---|---| | * | o | | | | o | * | |---|---|---| |---|---|---| Right Chariot Left Chariot is this correct? question 4: i also have (a small) reason to believe that the diagrams for the moves of the free demon and the free tapir are switched. currently they are listed as: |---|---|---| |---|---|---| | * | 5 | * | | * | * | * | |---|---|---| |---|---|---| | * |FDe| * | | 5 |FTp| 5 | |---|---|---| |---|---|---| | * | 5 | * | | * | * | * | |---|---|---| |---|---|---| Free Demon Free Tapir is this correct? thanks, ben
