From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 6 feb 1997 Subject: This week in Shukan Shogi (no. 672, February 5th 1997) With my program by far not ready for Saturdays Computer Shogi Tournament I have been working very hard to avoid embarrassment as much as possible. As a result, I have not been able to read Shukan Shogi very thoroughly this week and I can only give a short summary of the results: 1) Habu won the third game of the Osho against Tanigawa and leads now by 3-0. With the tough Kio match against Morishita starting Saturday, he will look to wrap things up quickly. It is weird how a new year can change things for some people. This Osho match Habu looks like his old invincible self again. He won the extremely difficult third game without making even a slight error and by playing two brilliant moves that killed Tanigawa's attack. 2) In the Oi league Fujii had a good start by beating Okazaki. In the other group, Maruyama also started well by winning against Ono. Maruyama was very close to his first challengership last year, when he lost the play-off game against Fukaura. 3) In the kisei league Moriuchi was the second to qualify for the eight player knock-out final. He beat Yonenaga to join Habu in the finals. Still six places to be decided, though... 4) In the first group of the Ryu-O Sato beat Nakamura and Morishita beat Hiura to reach the quarterfinals. Both Sato and Morishita have been doing very well in this tournament in the past, Sato being a Ryu-O titleholder and Morishita being a challenger for the title once. Sorry, but that is about all I have time for this week. Next week my life will return to normal and I expect to have more time then.
