From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 12 apr 1997 Subject: Meijin Match Game 1 YATTA!! TANIGAWA TAKES THE FIRST GAME!! I think this year's Meijin match will be very interesting. Tanigawa beat Habu in the first game and did so in great style. Game summary as I understood it from Shima on the NHK: Habu with white tried to force the issue in a double yagura and got a bad position. However, he fought back in brilliant style and made it a very close endgame. In that endgame there was an oversight by both players. Tanigawa thought he threatened mate with a silver drop and Habu thought so too and defended. However, there was no mate and if Habu would have attacked instead of defended, he might have won. As it went, he did not get another chance. If Shukan Shogi has it, more on the game in a couple of days, Reijer -- Reijer Grimbergen Electrotechnical Laboratory Palcious Tsukuba 302 1-1-4 Umezono 1-24-8 Ninomiya Tsukuba-shi, Ibaraki-ken Tsukuba-shi, Ibaraki-ken 305 JAPAN 305 JAPAN E-mail: grimberg etl go jp Tel: 0298-59-1606 WWW: http://www.etl.go.jp:8080/etl/suiron/~grimberg Tel: +81-(0)298-54-5080 extension: 67431 Fax: +81-(0)298-58-5918
