From: Martin Danerud PARTILLE MAIL TELIA COM> Date: 19 sep 1996 Subject: Shogi activities in Sweden Dear shogi players, The day before yesterday I gave my first lecture about shogi at the Goteborg Main Library (Stadsbiblioteket) at Goteborg. The lecture was attended by twenty people, and already I have been asked to give this lecture again later and elsewhere. The eight parts of my lecture were: Shogi rules (shown at a demonstration board) Shogi history Shogi today (Break) Shogi in Japanese culture Shogi - Made in Japan Shogi in Europe Shogi in Sweden Shogi at Internet After the break I showed the following tsume problem at the demonstration bo= ard. 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 +--------------------------------------------+ White in hand: | | | | | | wK | | |+bP | a +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | wG | wN | | | | b | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ | | | | | | | bS | | | c +-------------------------------------------- | | | | | wB | | bL | | | d +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | e +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | f +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | g +--------------------------------------------+ Black in hand: | | | | | | | | | | h +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ |2R | | | | | | | | | | | i | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ The solution (below) is maybe easy to find for members of Shogi-L, but I think it is especially illustrative for beginners, since it shows some of the key features of catching the king in shogi. The king should not be allowed to escape, but rather be fixed to a certain square where the attacking forces could be concentrated. The 3rd and 31st of October and the 28th of November there will be "hands-on-activities" where people can come and try shogi at the cafeteria of the Goteborg Main Library at six o=B4clock. These events will also be announced in the chess section of a daily newspaper. Hopefully, these activities are the start of organized shogi in Sweden. Any members of shogi-L who come to Goteborg on any of these Thursdays are of course welcome! SOLUTION: 1.R'3a Kx3a 2.S3b+ Bx3b 3.R'2a 1-0 Sincerely yours, Dr Martin Danerud
