From: Hugo Hollanders WORLDONLINE NL> Date: 24 oct 1996 Subject: Results 6th German Open The 6. International German Open took place on 19. and 20. October in Weilburg, a small ancient city north of Frankfurt. A record number of 37 players found their way including 11 (!) players with a 2-digit ranking. This is very pleasing, as it shows, that there are still new players coming from behind. This year we had again two professional shogi players from Japan, who stopped by from their tour through some European countries. Mr. Kitajima and Mr. Nozuki, both 4. Dan pros made an exceptionally good impression on the shogi community. Both of them could speak English very well and both of them were very very friendly and never tired of playing amateurs (no matter what strength) and giving advice or annotating games. I do hope they had as much fun in Europe as we had with them. Winner of the tournament and therefore new International German Champion became Marc Theeuwen, who recovered from the European Championship in time to produce a result worthy of the Dutch Champion (5/5). Second place went to Mieki Tadashi from Berlin, who needs someone in great shape like Marc to stop him. The best Kyu player and winner of the first kyu group became Jeroen Tiggelman from The Hague, who, in spite of receiving the strongest opponents, was the only kyu player with 4 wins. The second kyu group has been won by Hans Gerards and Werner Baer, who showed themselves to be stronger than a big group of younger players. Trailing very closely behind is Jean-Luc Jenny from France who is certainly a most promising player, as everybody who has seen his games (or had to experience him as opponent) will think too. 6.
