Then one might be able to have a proper grade to start with. I have played through the gamescores of most of the postal tori shogi players and I think it is possible to make an estaimation of how strong a player is by seeing his games. If you look at a game of David Murphy (former European Shogi Champion) you would not dare to give him a rank of 8. Kyu or so. I think it is quite OK to give the strongest amateur player the rank of shodan, which still gives room to the top if Habu decides to try Tori.
