From: Dick Iwakura HK NTTDATA NET> Date: 27 may 1996 Subject: Lecture No.2 -- Switching Rook (Hineri Bisha) SHOGI LECTURE FOR THE BEGINNERS ============================== LECTURE NO.2 -- SWITCHING ROOK How is everybody? This is Dick Iwakura of the Hong Kong Shogi Club and let's start Lecture N0. 2 of Switching Rook. Please review the last Lecture again and we will continue. To become a skillful Shogi Player, please make it a rule to study several points every day. First of all, Tsume Shogi Problems are very important for you to be stronger at the ending stage of Shogi Play, so please try to solve the 5-7 step $B#s (J problems everyday at least 10 of them. If you are still a real beginner, please start them from 3 steps. You may learn and memorize many skillful movements from Tsume Shogi. I recommend all of you to study "Hajimete no Tsume Shogi" written by Mr. Futagami (9 Dan) who is the chairman of Shogi Renmei now. Second, please try to solve the problem of "What is the next step?" You can learn the skillful methods of the middle stage of Shogi fight. I recommend the book titled "Tsugi no Itte" written by Mr. Nakahara (Eternal 10 Dan). This is a kind of old book but it will be very effective for the beginners or many Shogi players less than Shodan. Let's start the lecture. Please move the pieces (Koma) on your actual Shogi board. B-9g (#4) COMMENTS: #1 -- Usually Gote (White) moves 62 Gin (S-6b) or 72 Gin S-7b) instead of 34 FU (P-3d). 62 Gin ( S-6b) is old style and 72 Gin (S-7b) is a new one. (This will be explained to you later) #2 -- 96 FU (P-9f) must be played earlier than 76 FU (P-7f) to avod other complex variations. #3 -- Hisha (The rook) must be going back to Rank 2. Otherwise, Sente(Black) will drop 85 FU (P-8e). Then Hisha (The rook) will be captured by 85 FU (P-8e) and etc. #4 -- The Shogi beginners are all surprised with this 97 Kaku (B-9g) because Gote's Hisha (Whites Rook) can promote as 89 HI-NARI (R-8i+) but you need not be afraid of this Hisha Nari (Rook promotion). Because you can kill/capture this Ryu (Promoted Rook)at the end. Can anybody try to kill/capture this Ryu (Dragon) [promoted Rook]?. Try to give me the score you moved. The above score has already shown many mistakes for both sides. If you become Shodan or higher, you will never move as above. Px4e Gx4e 65 FU (#5) DO FU 23. P-6e (#5) Px6e 74 FU DO FU 24. P-7d Px7e ???? (#6) 25. ???? (#6) Explanation: #1 - 75 FU (P-7d)- This is to try to exchange the Hisha (Rook) and if Gote (White) moves to capture 36 HI(R-3f), DO-FU(Px3e). Then see this status. You can drop Hisha(The Rook) many places on Gote (White) but not so many places in Sente's (Black's) camp. Switching Rook always tries to exchange Hisha (Rooks) and this is why Sente (Black) feels very comfortable. #2 - 77 KEI (N-7g) - If you drop 87 FU (P*8g), Gote (White) will be satisfied and you don't need to drop FU (a Pawn). Instead, jump KEIMA (the Knight) to 77 (7g). If Gote (White) drops 86 FU (P*8f) , you can drop 85 FU (P*8e). Then Gote's 86 FU White's P*8f) will be free of charges. This is why Sente's 96 FU (Black's P-9f) is very important. If you don't move 96 FU (P-9f) earlier, Gote's 87 FU (Whites P-8g) can end the game. #3 - 86 HI (R-8f) - It still tries to exchange Hisha (Rooks). Gote (White) still can not exchange it, so he drops 84 FU (P*8d 85 FU (P*8e) drop makes no sense because of DO HI (Rx8e). Also 83 FU (P*8c) drop makes Hisha (the Rook) very tight. Therefore, there is only a way for 84 FU (P*8d). Until this stage, this is essential for Switching Rook and I hope you can move it several times to remember the correct steps #4 - 46 FU (P-4f)- This 46 FU (P-4f) is very important also. If you move 67 GIN (S-6g) instead of this, Gote (White) will move 45 FU (P-4e). Then if Gote (White) moves 43 KIN next, his Kaku (Bishop) will start working, which is not so profitable for Sente (Black). Please reject Gote's 45 FU (White's P-4e). Then Gote's Kaku (White's Bishop) is still not effective. #5 - This is the timing of Shikake (fighting start) because you can see 61's KIN (G6g) is not joined with any Koma (pieces). Of course, Sente (Black) wishes to move 39 GYOKU (K-3i) and 58 GIN (S-5h) to protect GYOKU (the King) but at the same time, Gote (White) will protect it by 52 KIN-43 KIN (G-5b, G-4c). You must be brave and start the attack now! When you attack, it is important to move FUs (Pawns) first. You move 65 FU, 74 FU, (P-6e, P-7d) then Hisha (rook)and Kaku (Bishop) are going through smoothly. #6 -- The Sente (Black) can become to be very superior by this move but how? This is my question for all of you. This is actually a very famous movement of Tsugi no Itte (Next step). Please try to think and give me an answer by mentioning at least the next 5 steps. Switching Rook is very comfortable method for Sente (Black) because Gote (White) must always refuse to exchange Hisha (rooks), and also this method can test your sensitivity for both static and ranging rook at the same time. However, if you move 26FU (P-2f) and Gote(White) moves 34 FU (P-3d), this is a different game. Shogi's strategy can be decided by first 5 steps or less usually. The above moments are still amateur ones and I will show you the thoughts of Habu san in next lecture, which is very interesting to Shogi players around 2-3 Kyu. WHAT IS HABU'S BRAIN!? I prepared two effective problems for all of you as follows : 1. What is the next Step? (Tsugi no Itte) --- Please mention at least 3 steps. ---- 2. 5 step Tsume Shogi Note: That is a BMP file. (I can not send such a big file thru SHOGI-L ). It takes 3 minutes to download. So it will be sent to you upon your request. This can be read by Paint Brush or any other BMP viewers. Please solve these problems and if you feel it is so easy, you have already become 3 Kyu or more. I am waiting for your questions or comments regarding the strategy of Switching Rook (Hineri Bisha) Thanks for reading. Ganbatte !
