From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 22 may 1996 Subject: This week in Shukan Shogi (no. 636, May 22nd 1996) & Meijin-sen MORIUCHI STILL ALIVE!!! Yesterday Moriuchi kept his hope of becoming Meijin alive by beating Habu in the fourth game. If Habu would have won, all joseki books on Ranging Rook would have had to be rewritten. He played Fourth File Rook (with white) and choose a variation that is judged as inferior for the Furibisha side in all Shogi books. As it turned out, Habu seemed to be losing straight from the opening. However, the television commentator Kobayashi (8-d), who is the top expert of Furibisha play, was not so sure and said that he would have to study the game in depth. After all, if Habu plays this variation, you better believe that there is something in it. In any case, Moriuchi had only one move to spare in the endgame, so it was again rather close... I am looking forward to Shukan Shogi's comments next week. This week the main story in Shukan Shogi is the final game in the Kisei tournament between Miura and Yashiki. Miura was looking to become Kisei challenger for the second time in a row (the Kisei is being played twice a year) and Yashiki was hoping to get back on the grand stage of a major title match after 6 years. Miura won the game and can now start thinking about how to better his score of last time (0-3). In the Oza, Waki beat Sato Yasumitsu and grabbed the last remaining place in the best quarterfinals. It was a bad week for Sato, because he also lost in the white group of the Oi against Namekata. This means that Maruyama is now almost sure of victory in this group with a perfect score from three games, while all his rivals do not have better scores than 2-2. Maruyama only has to win one of his two final games to play the winner of the red group for the right to challenge Habu. In the red group Gouda scored an important victory over Kansaki. Both he and Fukaura are now at 3-1 with one game to play.
