From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 10 may 1996 Subject: This week in Shukan Shogi (no. 634, May 8th 1996) Well, Golden Week followed by a lazy postman made this very late, but here we go... Yashiki completed his sweep of Fujii by also winning the third game of the Zen Nihon Pro tournament. Fujii must be very frustrated, losing four times in a row against the same player in less than a month. Especially since he has had chances to win every single game. The pattern in this game was similar to that of the previous ones. Fujii played (as always) Fourth File Rook and Yashiki had to choose the opening strategy. This time he pulled a very rare move out of the hat, an early B6f followed by S8h. After several small mistakes by both players the game resulted in a very close endgame which was eventually won by Yashiki. Yashiki must feel good to be back at the top. After becoming the youngest title holder ever (18 years and 6 months) by beating Nakahara in the Kisei in 1990 (one of the few records Habu does not have and will never get), it had become rather silent around him. His "Ninja style" finally seems to be working again. Because it was Golden Week, one of two sacred holidays in Japan (the other being the days after New Year), there was not much other Shogi activity. Shima threw the red group of the Oi-league wide open by beating leader Fukaura. It was the first win for Shima (1-3) and the first loss for Fukaura (3-1). Gouda, Takahashi and Kansaki must be delighted at the result. All at 2-1, they are again in the race to become the challenger. In the Oza tournament Mori beat Nakahara to advance to the last eight and keep his dreams of a rematch with Habu alive. Tanigawa crushed Izumi with a Furibisha Anaguma and also reached the final eight. That's about all for this week. Yesterday the third game of the Meijin-sen started. No Yagura this time, but Kakugawari (Bishop Exchange). Moriuchi set the game up with a Bogin (Climbing Silver), but after Habu played his king away from the attacking zone (Right Side King) Moriuchi switched the silver from 8d to 6d. Of course, not much can be said at this stage. The game will be played to a finish today.
