From: Douglas J Dysart UCUNIX SAN UC EDU> Date: 28 mar 1996 Subject: US Shogi Championships!! I just got done playing in New York at the US Shogi Championships. While I am just a beginner, I had fun playing in the preliminary round and playing in simul exhibitions done by the two professionals there, Ishakawa and Kitajima. I would like to thank Pieter Stouten for making it all possible by providing info on the web! I saw his page three days before the tournament, and decided to take a bus there. I am broke and not good at Shogi (I only learned how to play two months ago), but I still waited 17 hours for my bus to make it to the Big Apple. I had a lot of shogi and chess and Xianqi equipment stolen, but I still felt it was worth it because I learned so much about the way to play and about the environment of shogi tournaments. I was surprised more people from the Chicago club didn't show up, but I hope to see them soon. Anyway, I am just excited about that and spreading the game. I hope to have a large club here in Cincinnati soon! Congratulations to Mr. Watanabe for his victory and to Geaorge Foster for being named the US representative in Japan's big tournament soon!
