I'm a western chess tournament player who would never play with flat pieces with the silly 'P', 'B', etc. written on it. In the same respect, I would never encourage anyone to play with a non-Kanji Shogi set. When I started playing the game, I challenged myself to learn to use the standard Shogi materials. I am still trying to learn all the vocabulary one needs to know in playing against a Japanese opponent. If I were Japanese and I noticed all these western players trying to distort the beauty of Shogi, its pieces, and its notation, I would be rather ticked too. However, let's all try to keep the unity and respect diversity of opinion. ;) Thanks, and don't regard this as any kind of flame, nor respond with a flame. I just want to play!
