The level-to-noise ratio of > news groups might be a reason to keep shogi-l and a rec.games.shogi > separate. Any opinions? I've had an opinion on this one for a while. I don't think having both would be at all harmful. People from the mailing list could periodically post what was said on the list to the newsgroup and vice-versa. Trashing the mailing list for the newsgroup is a very bad idea since not all people can access newsgroups. And not having a newsgroup because it would seem redundant doesn't quite seem right either because many folks completely ignore mailing lists because they don't like the idea of receiving many messages per day. So, I say, have both. rec.games.shogi would be great, and would probably have more noise than this group so I would definitely remain subscribed to the list. I forgot the technicalities of getting a newsgroup but I think we need a certain amount of votes or something like that.
