From: "george (g.) jost" BNR CA> Date: 29 jan 1996 Subject: Re: game analysis and annotation Yes, I whole heartedly agree! Of course I'm a beginner who is not qualified to do any of this stuff. (I have no rating but I'd hazard a guess that I'm between a 13-11th Qiu).(I know I'm not a dan and imagine I'm better than a rank beginner). What I see on the internet are plenty of TSUME but (forgive my japanese mistakes ...) 1) No tsumuji. (Moves that tend to work well/heuristics) (I obtained some from Fairbarn's book) E.g, land a piece where your opponent wishes to land. Fairbairn mentions that about 30-70 tsumuji exuist but only supplies about 12 or so. Of course for a beginner that is probably plenty. Still it would be nice if some really altruistic 1-9th dan player could supply such a list. This would be better than 70 different The reward would be perhaps a greater supply of competition? But of course one requires experience to understanding such things; nothings for free. 2) No lists of usefull castles. (Tractable) This is something that can at least give one some idea. There is a book that was supposed to have been slated for english translation but I fear that perhaps there wasn't sufficent interest? I want it but I don't know where to get it. 3)There is also a book coming in three years (thanks Sano called it all begins with a ?PAWN.) Sob to wait so long, but the work is said to be quite comprehensive. Other advanced works of interest appear perhaps to be those of Horoyuki Lida. I don't know if any of his work is translated but I'd be interested in buying if they were. I feel that those who do the trouble should be financially rewarded for it. 4) Shogi drinking partners! Alas, I have but one regular shogi partener and we have eaten sushi together once, but not yet gone to a bar. There is a cafe in Ottawa in wehich only chess is played. (Cafe Vim). We have considered playing Shogi there. My uncle told me that when he was in Japan there were Japanese who played during lunch regularly. Ah how I'd long to challenge such as these ... Oh, well I'm not in Japan so I guess I have to make due. 5) Shogi newsgroup: yes I agree. Of course newsgroups do have the tendancy to get cluttered with trash. -- George (613)-765-2895 :) e-mail: jost bnr ca In Shogi, your rook may come back to haunt you ... ---------------------------------------------------- This memo does not represent the views of BNR/Nortel.
