I think a news group is a good idea. The discussion about this took place between 7 and 15 October 1995. If anybody wants a copy of the 12 mails about this, just drop me a line. Most everybody agreed that a news group was desirable. We should ensure, however, that people with access only to mail and not to news would not be left out. Therefore, the news group and the discussion list should be mirroring each other so that all postings are available through news and mail. In order to avoid that the same message goes back and forth endlessly between news group and discussion list, there should be one server with a news feed that picks up all rec.games.shogi postings and sends them to SHOGI-L and that takes all SHOGI-L postings and puts them on rec.games.shogi. That server should also keep track of where the posting originated so that an endless loop can be avoided. Ideally (but not necessarily), the SHOGI-L server should take care of that. I have heard that majordomo can do that, but currently SHOGI-L is run with listserver software. Also, I am not sure that the people at technion would be too thrilled to set up a mirroring mechanism (if at all possible with a listserver). Hints and preferably complete solutions , are welcome. Even if mirroring cannot be worked out, there is no reason not to start a news group. Volunteers, please go through the motions and get the news group proposed. Would there be enough of us (and on rec.games.*) to start a news group? BTW, an excellent source of Shogi info is Bob Diertens's SHOGI-L mirror.
