From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 26 jan 1996 Subject: Blindfolded Shogi It is interesting that this subject suddenly appears, because in Shogi Magazine number 12 of last year and number 1 of this year there were two articles about blindfolded Shogi compared to blindfolded chess. I have not seen the December issue, where Moriuchi 8-dan played blindfolded against three opponents, but I have read the January article where Sato Yasumitsu was challenged by five opponents with an average grade of amateur 3-dan. Sato won all games without making a mistake, but Moriuchi made a mistake in one of his games as quoted in the discussion section. This is of course more a lack of practise than anything significant. The article had a large discussion about the differences between blindfolded chess and blindfolded Shogi, focussing on the difficulties of remembering 40 pieces at all times. However, concluding from the results of Sato and Moriuchi, a trained professional must be able to play at least 10 opponents. Sorry I do not remember more, I have the article at home...
