one non-trivial side-effect of learning the japanese notation is access
to the shogi literature in japanese.  while i play mostly go, rather
than shogi, the situation seems similar.  the little bit of kanji
i have learned allows me to read japanese problem books and game scores.
considering the miniscule amount of shogi literature in english,
this is worth a lot.
