From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 7 feb 1996 Subject: This week in Shukan Shogi (no. 621, 2-7-96) Again, all the headlines in Shukan Shogi are for Habu. Winning the third game of the Osho gives him four chances to realise the impossible. It seems Shukan Shogi underlines my impression about this game in that it was a big loss for Tanigawa. Remarkably little game comments this time, but that may be caused by the short time between the end of the game and the publication of this week's issue. However, for the moment it seems that even though Tanigawa started the game positively, a questionable move and a mistake in defence in the endgame seemed to be enough for a Habu victory. Mistakes in defence by "Lightning Speed Attack" Tanigawa are the story of the match so far. Game 4 is scheduled for the 13th and 14th and I will try to put it "live" on my homepage. Other main story is the defence of the Ladies Meijin title by Shimizu, who crushed Challenger Nakai 3-0. Shimizu's next aim will be to win all four major titles, thereby establishing herself as the Ladies Habu. By the way, Habu is still hungry for more. He beat Maruyama in the Zen Nihon Pro Tournament to reach the last 8. This tournament is sometimes considered to be the 8th major title. Habu has also reached the last four of the two major television tournaments, the NHK tournament and the tournament of Tokyo TV. It is hoped that his marriage will direct his appetite in a different direction, because otherwise Shogi may not be very interesting in the next 20 years :-). Finally, the Oi league has started. Two very strong groups, with only young Moriuchi missing, will decide the challenger of Habu. "Summer Prince" or "Mr. Oi" Goda started well to get into yet another Oi title match by beating Shima in the first game of the Red Group. If Goda would be challenger of Habu, it would be his fifth consecutive Oi match. Let's wait and see...
