Being a beginner in Shogi (but liking the game very much) I played a few times Chess with drops. I don't know if this is a known chess variant (I guess it has to be, but I couldn't find it in Pritchard's book on Chess Variants quickly). It is like bughouse (where you play with two persons against two, and give any captured piece to your partner to be dropped by him). However, I played it on only one board, which means that you have to switch any captured piece for the same piece of your own colour (you thus need two sets of chess pieces). The games I played really were fun!
