I think it's really a problem debating chess history without without know
a single letter of vedic literature, a single word of Pali or Sanskrit
(which I don't either), or at least chinese as for that. But it should be
possible to be at least on the height of academic knowledge at least as
far as it exists in a published form. So may I draw your attn. to a
sysmposium held in Pondicherry late this November. Title: Approaching the
roots of Chess.I know nothing of the outcome yet, but it might  be worth
while looking for it. I recommend reading the articke by John Fairbairn on
shogi history in Shogi, no. 27, Sept. 1980. Further literature in english
doesn't exist to my knowledge. In japanese I recommend Kubodera Koichi,
Nihon shogi shusei, Tokyo 1995, ISBN 4-404-02184-4.
