The bishop in chess has two origins that I am aware of...

One ancestor is the "elephant" which must be Indian in origin.  It moved two
and only two diagonally in any direction, jumping over any pieces in the
process.

The other ancestor is the "archer", which I seem to remember is the original
name for bishop.  Someone who is familiar with chess in a Germanic language
may volunteer the name for the "diagonal" piece, and its English translation.
