To make a functional working program, it's probably more effective to use an opening book, but the artistic programmer (which is definitely NOT a contradiction) tries to let the computer's strategic and tactical rules produce an opening on it's own. A major compliment to chess computer programmers was the moment a computer without an opening book played a well known 'book' defence through several moves!
