From: John Givens MOTHER COM> Date: 9 dec 1996 Subject: Shogi Shogi Shogi! Glen I'm not sure about the value of all the pecies but, Trevor Leggett (4 Dan and author of Shogi Japan's game of strategy) says that "Pawns have no real exchange value...Never simply take pawns for the sake of winning them, unless you can see clearly that you need them." at any rate the computer would lose very badly if it spent all it's time capturing pawns. On the other hand a shogi proverb says "without pawns in hand the game is lost" I think you should have them worth something until the computer has two or three, then have them worth nothing as far as capturing. I have see a list (can't remember where) that said rooks=15 bishop=12 pawn=1. Also does anyone know if there has been any greatest shogi human vs. greatest shogi computer? If so who won?
