From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 19 apr 1996 Subject: Apology to George Fernandez and yes, more on rules Well, well, the Shogi world never stops to amaze me. I have just been shown the Shogi Sekai booklet with the rules again. Of course I had already seen it and also tried to read it. However, it now turns out that one of the things I could not read was of vital importance. On the cover it says: "official autorization by the Shogi Renmei". That means that I was wrong about the booklet all along and that George Fernandez was right. Sorry, George. In the rulebook mate is defined as: "When it is impossible to avoid that the king is being taken on the next move, the king is mated". Also, in the rulebook it says that the game is finished when the king is mated and that it is an illegal move to leave your king in check. This seems to leave no loopholes for giving check while your own king is in checkmate. It seems that this definition solves the original question without any doubts. Still, I am not convinced that the rulebook can be compared to the official rules of chess, but I may be wrong. Any chess player out there with the official rules of chess and the cases which are covered there?
