It was beating me soundly within 70 moves until this evening, when I relaxed a bit and stopped being so defensive. I'll still lose this game but I was shocked to see the tactical advantages I could get just by being bold. I'm talking about level one by the way: I'm still not very good yet. I'm not only making silly mistakes all the time, but don't have a clear strategy. Actually in chess too I'm weak on long term strategy, but (relatively) great in short move sequences and getting piece advantages. That's what I started doing in today's shogi game, only to throw away momentum by not seeing that his king could thread his way through his pawns to safety. Shogi's all about momentum, right? You just chuck pieces at the other guy, and don't let up till he's mated. You only need the confidence to leave yourself wide open. Anyway, you can see my play level... > Recently the author of GNU Shogi, K. Seki, sent me a program >called _Kakinoki Shogi_. Next time I'm in Akihabara Electric town, I'll find out if that was Kakinoki. But I personally won't need to upgrade from GNU for a while! I'll let you know about that game. Jon PS I hope you don't mind me posting this on Shogi L too. Maybe someone knows about Kakinoki.
