As far as I know, the word "tsume" means "having a forced mate" or
"checkmating problem". So Michael's answer would not be totally correct.
Although western players tend to use the word "tsume" for "mate", the proper
Japanese word for "mate" is "tsumi" (or "sokuzumi").

I hope any native speaker will correct me, if I'm wrong.
