Ok, I've been thinking about this and I haven't found a solution yet, but my best attempt so far is that each player, looking only at his/her own pieces, sees something like this: BGSGSGBGR .L.P.P.PP NN....... KL....... PP....... ......... ......... ......... ......... Note that there are two bishops. One of them needs to be a gold. (note that some of the Gs are really +Ps). If someone can fix this up, we just add a white copy of this rotated by 180 degrees and the problem is solved. Perhaps, though, I can replace the R by a G and then the white half of the solution has 2Rs instead of 2Bs. Anyone? I'll keep thinking about this later on today. It would almost be preferable to find that the only solution(s) were did not have rotational symmetry.
