From: Pieter Stouten CHEMSCI5 dmpc com> Date: 8 oct 1995 Subject: Re: Popularising Shogi on the Net If people want a newsgroup I am all in favour. Anything that will popularize Shogi is of help. I am happy with the steady increase of Shogi-L membership over the last half year, which I can only attribute to the Shogi-related pages out on the net. Without a survey, however, I cannot be sure. What I tried to set up several years ago was a transparent mirroring system of a news group and a mailing list, but gave up quickly since nobody had expressed a real interest in a news group (and we could not figure out exactly how to do it anyway ). What would have to happen to make the mirroring work is that all mail to Shogi-L be automatically forwarded to the news group and that Shogi-L somehow can "read" the news group. The only thing to watch out for is that mail does not get sent to the list, forwarded to the news group, forwarded to the list, forwarded to the news group, etc. At the list's end this infinite loop is easy to avoid, but I would not know how to achieve this with a news group (leading to mailing list subscribers receiving duplicate messages). An alternative to mirroring is that posting only occurs to the news group (not to Shogi-L) and that Shogi-L somehow has a news feed. Maybe there are other mechanisms to have a news group and mailing list with identical messages, but I know of none. If somebody has ideas as to how to do this, please let me know. I do not know if it is feasible, though. I think *replacing* SHOGI-L with a newsgroup is a bad idea, because 1) many people may not have internet access apart from e-mail, 2) their employer or provider may not pass on games-related news groups, 3) news group postings may expire before one has a chance to read them, and 4) people may prefer to automatically get postings in their mailbox rather than having to scan news groups. Since my goal is to have as many netizens exposed to Shogi, replacing the mailing list with a news group does not sound all that attractive.
