From: "Randal J. Andrews" IX NETCOM COM> Date: 1 nov 1995 Subject: Playing on IGS It is possible to play shogi on IGS, but you need the patience of a saint. You have to be prepared to wait quite some time for anyone to show up. Last Monday, I was lucky: Takeshi Miyao was already waiting and we played the following exciting game. I think a file should be created in the archives called IGS-FOLK that contains the e-mail addresses of people willing to play on IGS. Players can then contact each other to arrange a time to play. The file needs to be regularly updated and references to it added to the relevant FAQs. Black: Takeshi Miyao (2 kyu) White: Randy Andrews (UNR) 1 P7g-7f 1 P8c-8d 2 P6g-6f 2 P3c-3d 3 R2h-7h 3 P8d-8e 4 B8h-7g 4 K5a-4b 5 S7i-6h 5 K4b-3b 6 K5i-4h 6 P7c-7d 7 S6h-6g 7 S7a-6b 8 K4h-3h 8 G6a-5b 9 K3h-2h 9 P5c-5d 10 P5g-5f 10 P6c-6d 11 S3i-3h 11 N8a-7c 12 G6i-5h 12 S3a-4b 13 P1g-1f 13 P1c-1d 14 L9i-9h The opening phase is over. I thought his last move was a waste of time, so I commenced the attack. However, I probably should bring up a silver to 5c first. 14 P8e-8f 15 P8gx8f 15 P6d-6e 16 R7h-6h 16 P6ex6f 17 S6gx6f 17 P*6e 18 S6f-5g 18 B2bx7g+ 19 N8ix7g 19 B*9i 20 N7gx6e 20 N7cx6e 21 R6hx6e 21 R8bx8f Overlooking black's next move: a fork. Probably 21...B9i-4d+ is better. 22 B*9e 22 R8f-8b 23 P*8c 23 R8bx8c 24 B9ex6b+ 24 G5bx6b 25 R6ex6b+ 25 B9i-4d+ 26 +R6b-7b 26 R8c-8i+ 27 P4g-4f 27 P1d-1e 28 S*4e 28 +B4d-3e 29 N*2f Now I start a series of moves designed to breakthrough on the 1-file. 29 P1ex1f 30 P*1h 30 N*1g 31 P1hx1g 31 P1fx1g+ 32 L1ix1g 32 L1ax1g+ 33 N2ix1g 33 P*1f 34 P*1h 34 P1fx1g+ 35 P1hx1g 35 P*1f 36 P1gx1f 36 P*1e 37 L*1i 37 P1ex1f 38 P*1h 38 N2a-3c My edge file attack is stymied, but I have blocked his bolthole and got a knight and lance in hand. It's time to bring up some reinforcements. 39 N2fx3d 39 N3cx4e 40 N3dx4b+ 40 G4ax4b 41 S*2b Too optimistic. 41 S-4h is necessary. Now I demonstate how to break down the Mino. This position is tsume. 41 N*3f 42 P3gx3f 42 S*3g 43 S3hx3g 43 N4ex3g+ 44 K2hx3g 44 N*2e 45 K3g-4g 45 +R8ix4i 46 S5g-4h 46 +B3ex4f 47 K4gx4f 47 B*6h 48 N*5g 48 S*4e A quicker way to mate was 48 L*4d. 49 K4f-3e 49 B6hx5g+ 50 G5hx5g 50 G*3d 51 K3e-2f 51 N*1d 52 K2fx1f 52 P*1e 53 K1fx1e 53 G3d-2d 54 K1e-1f 54 L*1e Playing it over, it seems easy, but during the game it was not. The game took 2 hours to play and my opponent graciously added 5 minutes to my clock; just enough to avoid forfeiting on time. The clumsy IGS interface added to the difficulty. I would appreciate any comments you might have about this game. It would be great if someone would write a Winsock compatible shogi interface for IGS. It was rumored some months back that Nippon Telephone & Telegraph was working with NSR on a shogi server project. Does anybody have any additional news about that?
