Those shogi variants are really interesting to study as an entertainment/game and also as a historical object. But I also think it would be very difficult to really appreciate the beauty of those games without high level matches being played. As far as I can tell, there's not much public interest in Tori Shogi, etc. even in Japan, as Sam indicated a few days ago, and I don't know the interest level of pro shogi players on those variant games. I personally would be very much interested in learing more on those, but the "real" shogi is taking up too much of my time already! -Taki
