From: John Kenney EMBL-HEIDELBERG DE> Date: 24 mar 1994 Subject: BIG NEWS FOR GERMANY - Shogi pro (Mr Ono) visit!!! Shogi fans, April will see the first ever official visit to the German shogi association by a professional shogi player. Mr Ono, 7-dan, will be in Heidelberg from 6 to 11 April. He will be recovering from jet lag and visiting the city for the first couple of days, and then will simultaneously play handicap shogi games on 9 and 10 April. All in attendance will have an opportunity to play Mr. Ono. As an extra bonus, the EMBL handicap shogi championships will be held that same weekend. This quarterly handicap shogi tournament is held to encourage shogi play in the Heidelberg area by taking advantage of the interest at EMBL. So far, we have held three handicap shogi tournaments at EMBL in which the winner gets to hold (until the next championship) a wooden japanese shogi trophy (in honor of the great professional shogi champion, Oyama) with his or her name added to the list of champions. The winner also has the responsiblity of organizing the next tournament which MUST be held in Heidelberg or at EMBL. Players are welcome (in fact, encouraged) to participate in the tournament even if they do not wish to be considered for the EMBL championship (and its attendant responsiblities), the overall highest score will still be recognized as the tournament winner. The information for the Mr Ono simultaneous and EMBL handicap championship follows: begins 2:00pm 9 April and ends 5:00pm 10 April at EMBL. Tournament play and Mr. Ono's simulateous will be held concurrently. The tournament will be handicap quick play with biyoyomi (probably 20 min/player and 10 sec biyoyomi), so please bring a set and a clock (with biyoyomi) if you have one. Exact details will be decided upon after Mr. Ono arrives in Germany. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ARRANGING YOUR OWN ACCOMODATION AND TRANSPORTATION!!!
