From: Albyn Jones REED EDU> Date: 30 jan 1994 Subject: Re: a question on chess terms "cheapo" usually refers to a trap, which either succeeds immediately and results in a big reversal of the postion (quick checkmate, winnning a major piece, etc.). it is not a strategical ploy, but a tactical ploy. "playing for complications" is a bit more subtle, and may involve a dubious sacrifice or some other idea, which is strategically rather than tactically based. "cheapo" has a rather negative connotation, ie. if your opponent hasn't fallen asleep, it probably won't work. "playing for complications" is something strong players routinely do when facing a disadvantageous position that will only get worse unless they take immediate risks; ie. you expect that fairly routine technique will slowly strangle you. albyn
