From: John Kenney EMBL-HEIDELBERG DE> Date: 23 sep 1993 Subject: comments of new mac shogi program Tie Zeng of AppleSoft asked for feedback on two features of his shogi program (on the mac). >1. I noticed that in Shogi diagrams only the Chinese characters appeares on >the board instead of an icon like the real chess pieces. My program has two >features related to diagrams. One is users can print the diagram along the >move list out to a paper. Another is users can save the board image as a >PICT file so that users can import the PICT to a Word processor like >MacWrite Pro. I am saving or printing the board image instead of just >Chinese characters and board lines. >Is that acceptable or you prefer the other way? >2. On the notations, I am inclining to use Englsih character instead of Chinese >characters ( the board uses Chinese characters) right now out of two >considerations. One is I don't need to generate a Shogi font. Another is the >program will eventually be able to listen to voice commands and English is the >only voice understood right now on Mac. I may save some trouble if I use >english char. right now. Is this acceptable? This is very good. All shogi literature uses kangi in diagrams of the board. Westerners often use roman characters to list the moves. The ablity to list moves in kangi would be nice, but is not necessary. Extracting the diagram to another Mac utility is a great feature. I would very much like to get a copy of the program, we have many Macs here and a big group of shogi players with a wide range of playing strengths. John Kenney.
