From: John Kenney EMBL-HEIDELBERG DE> Date: 11 oct 1993 Subject: ISS (International shogi server) is great! Hello. Hey, this ISS (hellspark.wharton.upenn.edu 6969) is great! I played another game on the server and have fielded a number of questions about shogi from the go players. Klaus is right in that this is primarily a go server and we must respect the go players. But, so far, there has been no negative retorts to my "shouts" for playing shogi from the go players (although most of them don't know about and don't want to play shogi). It would be great to be able to set a flag signifying which game the person wants to play (for example, which can be seen with the who command). I really recommend all Shogi-L members try the server. If there is sufficient interest then we may get our own server! It is very easy to use and you only need a dumb terminal. Just connect, then "choice shogi" and play around with the "help" to see what is available. To start a game you need to find a partener (prearranged or try "shout" or "tell"), then "match". When playing a game you get a board position with each move (which can be toggled off). Still some bugs (like I had a question mark for one of my pieces in hand - I thought it maybe was a "mystery" piece, one which you don't know what it is until you drop it :-), but it works very well already. So register and let's play shogi! John Kenney.
