May I stress that - it is only an opinion. It seems to me that Shogi has nothing comparable to shape and pattern in Go. The closest resemblance, so it seems, is to look at the Shogi board in a global manner rather than local. When you do this, the distance of pieces from the kings becomes vital. If you hear otherwise, the answers are probably more reliable than mine. In fact, I would be interested were you to learn otherwise, particularly from DAN players.
