Pieter, thanks for your information.  Yes, I was thoroughly familiar with
the Shogi method of representing moves (also chess).  You see, I was simply
trying to simplify our games.
 
Incidentally, your idea about sending an ASCII board representation sounds
excellent.  Would you by any chance have sort-of a master setup (one for
you playing black, another when you play white).  I would like to adopt this
system.
